Smize really never caught on the way she wanted....yet I just used it in a sentence. doh!
It's firmly branded into my vernacular then.
Anyhoo, Tyra has decided that the term 'plus size model' is sooo 2006 and wants us to start using the phrase "Fiercely Real."
She even created a contest for models of the voluptuous persuasion.
It's called:
Fiercely Real Teen Model Search.
(I've highlighted the infuriating segments for your convenience)
"Hey My Gorgeous Girls, I've been trying to expand the definition of beauty through my B.I.O. (that's Beauty Inside & Out) campaign. As part of the campaign I wanted to do a plus-sized model search – ya know, represent the REAL girls. I got to thinking and since I've gotten so many requests to do a Top Model for teens, I figured I'd put the two ideas together here on Tyra.com! This is the first ever Plus-Sized Teen Model Search! But “plus-sized” models sounds so old fashioned… so I’m changing the term “Plus-Sized” and making it "Fiercely Real"! I will pick the winner ON STAGE on The Tyra Show. Yep, I want to see all ya’ll full-figured teen girls who can rock that H2T pose, take a great picture and strut their booty down the runway! Let’s show all those magazines, TV shows, blogs, designers and CRITICS (lots of them around!) that REAL girls are fierce too."
Now, by Tyra's definition, it seems as though I don't qualify as a REAL girl anymore due to my diminutive physique:

Since when did being a REAL girl equal plus size?

My girlfriends, I consider them to be the real-iest chicks I know and they are definitely not plus-size. They are not twigs either.
In fact, the majority of our meetings are centered around some form of gluttony.

True, I do have a particular interest in the subject. (Click here for a really long and informative post on the phenomenon of Holy Anorexia)
Listen, I don't want you to be overweight but I don't want you to have an eating disorder and try to pretend that you don't.
You should be healthy in mind and body.

I think the whole idea of "loving your fat" is a slippery slope. (Jezebel commenters, time for you to leave) We are slowly and systematically accommodating obesity by creating an environment that encourages weight gain. Bigger clothes, cars, airplane seats.

I don't remember many overweight classmates when I was in school either.
Have you been to a small town in North America lately?
Entire fat families.

I'm sick of that "real" shit. I always think, "As opposed to what...imaginary women?"
For realsies, you guys, this "real women have curves" thing is the worst EVER.
Iron -- but there have always been fat people, and there has always been a push to belittle, shame, scapegoat, humiliate them etc. etc.! And that sucks. I'm all for being healthy and destroying the wave of poisonous corn syrup that's enveloping the continent, but I'm also all for treating people with dignity and not equating fat with moral and intellectual weakness. Also I have a (not so) secret penchant for chubby men and I don't want them to go away! www.stockyjocks.tumblr.com, everybody! It's NSFW!
Fiercely Real?
As in, I'm Fiercely polishing off a bag of Cadbury Mini eggs, for Realz.
wendy- Yeah, who are these "real" police?
lily- Did you notice the brand of jackhammer in the 7th photo down is "Wacker?" Priceless.
Yes, there has always been fat people, there is just more of them now. It is clear we have way too much food over here and we need to share it.
There needs to be more education about corn syrup and healthy eating for sure. Beyond that, it is within the power of the individual to take control of their eating habits. I don't believe anybody really wants to be overweight and out of shape. Being fit feels great, it is undeniable. I used to be underweight when I was going through emotional turmoil...I could barely look at those photos today when I was searching for images for this post. I'm a much healthier weight now- happy and eating healthy with some indulgence thrown in.
ching- My Mother's Dumplings facebook fan page confirmation is conditional! I haven't been to this new location.....
Well said as usual I.C.
The idea that nobody should ever feel shame or feel bad about themselves for any reason because nothing is anyone's fault is bull.
I don't condone bullying overweight people in any way. I also don't think it's helpful to tell people "being fat is great, you're beautiful just the way you are". Some of the shows I have seen condemn the putting-down of fat people while simultaneously putting down all non-fat people! People who are not overweight are described as anorexic or "toothpicks" etc. Hypocrite much?
The point of this whole thing is that Tyra is a MORON. She should go away. now. don't. come. back. Tyra.
Please everyone avert their gaze, maybe she'll take a hint...
If I was a dude, I would propose to you RIGHT NOW.
PS - In regards to not getting a job post-grad, that art class is the only "fun" class I have. The rest of my classes are pretty much boring "Intro to Environmental Impact Assessment" stuff.
Wow! Tyra is out of her mind. "real" and fierce" don't change the fact that overweight girls are overweight. The word "fat" still works for me!
I can't get on board the fat acceptance movement.
Ok well the thing is that "plus sized models" aren't obese. They aren't even the national average (what it is now which is too high). So, if she's searching for plus sized models, they would be in healthy BMI's. Size 2 is not the only "real" woman either. It's a stupid phrase, yes but stick thin isn't the only way to be. I say if you are healthy, in a good weight range then you're good. Do some physical activity, eat in moderation the stuff you love and accept everyone. I think the important thing is just to know that everybody's body types are different and not everyone is a stick.
My sister is bulimic, so I learned to understand people with this issue and even try to help them to continues with a normal life, however someones need more than support and comprehension,They need something that I think only can get in a specialized clinic.
